It's Hurricane Season. Are you prepared in the event of flooding ...

June brings summer and the potential for hurricanes. According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), hurricane season started June 1 and will end on November 30.

Although there are areas of obvious risks, floods can happen anywhere it rains. Steady, heavy rainfall can easily create a situation that can lead to damage from flooding due to hurricanes, rapid rainfall, or problematic drainage systems.

You don?t have to live near a stream, lake or near the coastline to experience flooding. Just a few inches of water can leave you with thousands of dollars in damage.

It?s important to understand how flood insurance works. A flood policy is separate from a homeowners, condo or tenants policy. In the event of a disaster, the insurance would help cover damages to your home and contents caused specifically by flooding. Location will determine the degree of risk and flood insurance cost. Typically low-risk areas will carry the lowest premiums.
