Afghanistan unrest stirs worries, but doesn?t shake commitment

By Tom Curry, msnbc.com National Affairs Writer

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reaffirmed Tuesday the Obama administration?s determination to persist in seeking a stable government in Afghanistan after the murder of two U.S. military officers by an Afghan soldier inside the Interior Ministry building in Kabul.

Manuel Balce Ceneta / AP

'The reason we are there, senator, is because our mission is to dismantle, destroy, and defeat al Qaida and their terrorist allies,' Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said.

The weekend murders were the latest in a wave of ?fratricide? attacks by Afghan soldiers and policemen on American soldiers in Afghanistan.

At a Senate Budget Committee hearing Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., asked Panetta, ?When it comes to Afghanistan ? is it worth it? What is winning? What?s the benefit of winning? What?s the cost of losing??

?The reason we are there, senator, is because our mission is to dismantle, destroy, and defeat al Qaida and their terrorist allies,? Panetta said. ?Our ultimate goal here has to be an Afghanistan that can control and secure itself and make sure that it can never again become a safe haven where terrorists can plan attacks,?.

He added that ?the cost of losing? is that the Taliban would regain control of Afghanistan and that terrorist groups would regroup there ?and their sole goal is to attack this country.?

No senators asked Panetta whether the fratricide attacks call into question the Obama administration?s strategy of training Afghan military forces so that they can take responsibility for keeping order in the country once most U.S. forces are withdrawn in 2014, as Obama has promised.

Separately, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D- Mich., told reporters Tuesday that if there?s no repeat of the inadvertent burning of Korans in Afghanistan -- which may have triggered the murders of the two Americans -- then ?we will not see a repeat of this kind of violence. I don?t believe the Afghan people want us to leave. I don?t think that most of the Afghan army or police are willing to attack us, or want to attack us any way. I think it?s a very small minority.?

What?s more important, Levin said, is that ?the Afghan police and army are the ones who are putting down the violence? -- ?the riots and demonstrations which followed the Koran burning.

With one exception, other members of the Armed Services Committee said they were worried about the weekend attack and the pattern of fratricide incidents, but didn?t indicate they?d support a quicker drawdown of American forces or an earlier exit date.

Sen. Kay Hagan, D- N.C., said, ?It certainly raises a huge issue if people that we are helping and entrusting then kill our own soldiers.?

Sen. Jack Reed, D- R.I., said Afghan President?Hamid?Karzai and his cabinet needed to block infiltration and to prevent fratricide attacks. They now face ?a test of their commitment to partnering with NATO? and a chance to ?to demonstrate their seriousness? about taking steps to stop fratricide attacks.

He said, ?You want to be very careful and deliberate in this process, but I think it raises a significant issue of the willingness and capacity of the Afghani forces to partner with us.? But he said the ?trajectory has already been set? by President Obama for exit of U.S. forces in 2014.

The certainty of that exit date probably defuses the opposition to the Afghanistan deployment?among some members of Congress.

Calling the weekend killings ?horrible? and saying American forces would need to be ?much more vigorous in vetting our partners,? Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R- N.H., said she did not think the weekend?s events should lead to a change in American strategy.

?We still have a very important interest in Afghanistan,? she said, ?We cannot allow Afghanistan to become a launching pad and a haven for terrorism again. And if we suddenly withdraw from Afghanistan based on these events, we will actually empower those who are committing these acts of terrorism right now in Afghanistan and further encourage additional acts of terrorism.?

But another Armed Services Committee member, Democratic dissenter Sen. Joe?Manchin of West Virginia, said the murder of the U.S. officers ?reinforces what I have always said: that?s an extremely dangerous place. I don?t believe we should be there trying to nation build, trying to change the culture of people ? we shouldn?t, and I don?t think we can do that.?

He added, ?We should get out of there immediately and leave no doubt that we will go after terrorism wherever it may be. Everyone says, ?when you leave, they will all come back.? Well, if they come back with intent to do us harm, we?ll be back.?

But he said he didn?t want to put ?our sons and daughters in a situation where the people they trained are going to be turning their guns on them. It?s ridiculous.?

Home Nursing Point Loma - IdeaMarketers.com

For many of us with aging parents, deciding who will shoulder the responsibility of caring for loved ones is a reality we must face even while juggling the responsibilities of caring for our own children. The "Sandwich Generation" -- those between 40 and 60 years old who are sandwiched between caring for parents and children has emerged as a patient, dependable group providing love and care to needy family members.

For many in this special group, daily life is a challenge as balancing the needs of two dependent groups is tiresome and emotional y straining, even for the most dedicated caregiver. Luckily, home nursing offers a solution, giving struggling, exhausted family members a chance to finally enjoy some quality time with loved ones and the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are receiving a high level of care, contributing to a better quality of life.

"Quality Time"

Unfortunately, for many aging people, basic activities of daily living (ADL) can be extremely difficult, requiring assistance. Helping a loved one dress, bathe, eat and participate in everyday activities is at times exhausting and frustrating, leaving little if any energy or motivation to spend quality time talking, visiting or relaxing. A home nurse takes the responsibility of these mundane activities away from family members, freeing up more time and energy for them to spend quality time with loved ones. Having someone there to help that can be trusted provides an incredible sense of relief.

Improved Care

While many of us prefer not to admit it, in most cases, the quality of care received from a home nurse far exceeds that of even the most committed family member. Not that there is a lack of motivation or desire, but more simply, a home nurse is equipped with experience and formal training. An experienced professional can more efficiently deal with the challenges and difficulties of caring for someone who needs assistance. In many cases, the level of care exceeds that of a family member simply because there is no familial relationship to cloud judgment or create emotional challenges.

Better Quality of Life

That feeling of independence that comes from reaching small goals or achieving milestones in life starts to diminish as we age, leaving a giant whole where there used to be satisfaction, and a sense of accomplishment. A home nurse can give an aging family member that feeling of independence back, helping them cope with the realities associated with ageing. For many people, accepting assistance form someone outside the family is easier than relying on children to help. The help of a home nurse brings more quality time with loved ones, increased independence and a renewed spirit that contributes to a better quality of life.

Balancing the demands of caring for an aging parent with those of your own dependent family members is often difficult and emotionally draining. Luckily, the support and experience of a home nurse can relieve some of this pressure, provide more appropriate care, and open up well deserved opportunities for children and their aging parents to enjoy quality time together when they need it most.

Chelsea Jones: Hope for the Humanities?

Last Friday, I broke out my one decent business skirt, printed out 50 -- yes, 50 -- copies of my r?sum? and headed to Dillon Gymnasium for the Career Services Internship Fair, confident that my depressing losing streak of applying to internships was about to reach its end. My two friends, both prospective computer science majors, hoped that Mark Zuckerburg would be manning the Facebook table. Turns out he wasn't. I, a prospective English major, hoped that someone would be looking for an intern with a passion for writing and reading. Turns out they weren't.

In fact, I left the fair feeling even more discouraged than I had before. I wasn't ignorant of the fact that today's job market is catered toward young technological minds. Nor was I unaware that financial companies clamor for brilliant economics majors. But when the most extensive writing opportunity I could find was taking notes at a corporate board meeting, all of a sudden the prospects of becoming an English major were not so enticing.

And I'm not alone. Even in fields that would seem much more concentrated in the humanities, there seems to be a push for technologically minded applicants. Faridah Folawiyo (Princeton '15), who has been applying to magazine internships, agreed. "When I was trying to apply for internships in the fashion world, there were some that I had to discard immediately because they required advanced technological skills, which is something I never expected in the fashion industry," she said. Humanities majors are slowly falling by the wayside in fields that were once catered to well-versed writers and literary scholars.

So where does that leave us poor humanities majors? After the internship fair, I was confident that the answer was a single-room shack with a dozen cats, using my unpublished manuscripts to light fires for warmth. Granted, freshmen are not exactly in high demand as interns, but my concern is that even three years down the line, when I need a full-time job, I will still be struggling to find one suited for my talents.

But after speaking with other humanities majors and thinking honestly about my situation, I believe there is hope. It is not that humanities majors are unwanted these days, just that we have to redefine how we market the skills we've acquired in immersing ourselves in critical thinking and analytical writing rather than numbers and figures. Instead of priding myself on an in-depth reading of Sir Francis Bacon, it's more applicable that I recognize my resulting ability to understand the complexities of language and my ability to articulate my impressions of a work. Businesses need these skills just as they need quantitative minds. Maria Devonshire (Princeton '12), a comparative literature major, said, "Attention to detail and analytical thought are essential tools for a degree in the humanities. If businesses limit their hiring pool to candidates with quantitative skills, they ignore the potential of creative and personable candidates." We humanities majors are learned in the art of thinking, and no well-dressed, intimidating internship coordinator can tell me that is not a desirable and worthwhile skill.

So call it clich?, but I'm following my passion. I've been told if you love something, you'll make it work. If I'm passionate to the point that I can't be discouraged, then I will find an internship or job that's meant for my talents, and in that environment I will thrive. This isn't to say that I'll step off Princeton's campus and into a job at The New Yorker. I just know that I don't have to head in the direction of Wall Street to feel that my education was worthwhile. I may not make as much money as a computer programmer or financial consultant, but I will work hard wherever I end up, applying what I love to what I do, and perhaps afterward The New Yorker won't seem so unattainable.

It sounds idealistic, I suppose, but we humanities majors know we've found something substantial to hold on to, even if the internship fair did shake my resolve for a moment. We're not ignorant of the job market. We just know what we love. As my friend and fellow columnist Susannah Sharpless (Princeton '15), a prospective humanities major, said, "Language is absolutely the most important thing in the world, and I feel completely justified in my decision to spend my life immersing myself in it and trying to understand how it affects me and those around me." When I tell people that I'm an English major and the response is often a subtly condescending, "Oh, that's great. But what will you do with that?" it is undoubtedly disheartening. But, in the end, I'll do exactly what everyone in every other department does. I will keep applying until I find a job. It may not be with the same assuredness of a computer science major, but it will be with the confidence that the skills of communication and creative thinking that I have acquired through the humanities will never be out of demand.

Santorum defends Satan comments (Politico)

PHOENIX ? Rick Santorum said Tuesday that he will ?defend everything I?m saying? as 2008 comments he made about Satan having his ?sights on? the United States drew renewed fire.

Santorum told roughly 200 supporters at a rally here that when candidates veer from ?very structured, very ordered events,? voters believe they have to ?worry about everything he says.?

?No, you don?t, because I?ll defend everything I?ll say,? Santorum told the applauding crowd, pledging to ?tell you the truth about what?s going on in this country.?

Santorum didn?t specifically mention the four-year-old speech from Ave Maria University in Florida, from which the Satan comments came, or a number of other statements on the campaign trail that have raised eyebrows in recent days, including remarks that some say called into question President Barack Obama?s Christian faith. Questions have also arisen over comments Santorum made that appeared to compare the Obama presidency to the rise of Nazism before World War II and remarks about prenatal testing.

Asked about the Ave Maria speech by reporters following the Phoenix rally, Santorum called the question ?a joke? and ?absurd.?

?You know ? I?m a person of faith. I believe in good and evil. I think if somehow or another because you?re a person of faith you believe in good and evil is a disqualifier for president, we?re going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president,? Santorum said.

Santorum said questioning whether he believed Satan was attacking America was ?not relevant.?

?Look, guys, these are questions that are not relevant to what?s ? what?s being discussed in America today. What we?re talking about in America today is trying to get America growing. That?s what my speeches are about, that?s what we?re going to talk about in this campaign,? Santorum said.

?If they want to dig up old speeches of talking to [a] religious group, they can go ahead and do so, but I?m going to stay on message and I?m going to talk about things that Americans want to talk about, which is creating jobs, making our country more secure, and yeah, taking on the forces around his world who want to do harm to America, and you bet I will take them on.?

While Santorum?s past remarks are facing renewed scrutiny now, they aren?t atypical for him. The former Pennsylvania senator often paints a portrait of an America in peril, led by a president who does not believe in American exceptionalism and greatness.

The Satan remarks re-emerged Tuesday on the political landscape thanks to a banner headline on the Drudge Report, with quotes from the 2008 speech but no link to a news article. The headline was accompanied by a black-and-white photo of Santorum at a pulpit with a cross on it.

In Phoenix, Santorum stuck to his traditional stump speech ? embracing the values of ?small-town America? and promoting the rebirth of U.S. manufacturing ? but he seemed miffed about the reaction to the use of terms like good and evil from his 2008 speech.

?Ronald Reagan did it. He called the Soviet Union an evil empire and the media went wild,? he said. ?How dare you, how dare you ascribe terms like good and evil to regimes? Because Ronald Reagan told the truth, he didn?t sugarcoat it. He went out and called it the way it was. He went out and promoted the values of our country.?

FDA looking into inhalable caffeine :WagerWeb Entertainment

New York Sen. Charles Schumer has helped prod the FDA into investigating chapstick-sized caffeine inhalers called Aeroshots. The senator says his concern was prompted by incidents last year when students guzzled too many caffeinated alcoholic drinks for a quick buzz. Kids and teens ?are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product,? says Schumer.

Aeroshot manufacturer Breathable Foods says the product can be taken up to three times daily and also acts as a dietary supplement?another claim the FDA plans to investigate.

Aeroshot inventor David Edwards, a Harvard professor, says the inhalers are safe and include no taurine or other additives that boost the power of caffeine in energy drinks. Edwards also helped invent breathable chocolate and plans to promote a product that turns food and drinks into low-calorie flavor clouds.

(AP) ? Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder will sing at the private funeral of Whitney Houston on Saturday in what promises to be a very musical service.

Publicist Kristen Foster also confirms that invitations went out to Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown; her co-star in "The Bodyguard," Kevin Costner; and Oprah Winfrey.

Houston's longtime musical mentor, Clive Davis, will speak at the funeral. The eulogy will be given by gospel singer and longtime family friend Marvin Winans.

The Queen of Soul was a close family friend and considered Houston her goddaughter; she said in an email Thursday that Houston used to call her "Aunt Ree."

Organizers were getting the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark ready Thursday for the funeral. Drums and speakers, which were to be part of the musical service, were in the aisles.

Fans without invitations will be kept far away. Newark police say streets will be shut down for six square blocks around the church.

But on Thursday, there were several dozen fans outside, contributing to and taking pictures of the makeshift memorial to the superstar outside the church. Media were also outside of the venue.

Houston died Saturday in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 48.

Making weight key to female boxers' Olympic dreams

FILE - In this June 12, 2009 file photo, Brittany Inkrote, right, is hit by Andrecia Wasson, left, during their championship middleweight bout at the U.S. Boxing Championships in Denver. Wasson won the welterweight world title in 2010 and was the world's top-ranked 152-pounder in November 2010, but she moved up to 165 pounds in just over a year to take her Olympic shot, entering the U.S. team trials as an unseeded fighter. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey, File)

(AP) ? ?After slugging away for years in the unglamorous ranks of amateur women's boxing, Marlen Esparza was thrilled when her sport finally became an Olympic one.

But the invitation to London came with a catch: The petite, 106-pound national champion from Houston would have to gain six pounds to compete against bigger, stronger women if she wanted to qualify.

"It was another mountain to climb," said Esparza, who fights Tuesday night to try to win a spot on the three-member U.S. team. "I already thought it was going to be tough to make it to the Olympics, and now I'm going to have to cross this other obstacle."

?The International Olympic Committee's 2009 decision to cram female boxers from 10 traditional weight classes into just three divisions ? at 112, 132 and 165 pounds ? raised safety concerns and altered the entire structure of a sport that's still chasing worldwide acceptance. Many fighters spent the past two years struggling to put on or take off a few pounds to fit the IOC's guidelines, while others didn't even try.

?"For some of them, that's what ended their Olympic dream," said Christy Halbert, a veteran coach and the Chair of USA Boxing's Women's Task Force.

Six pounds might not seem like much, even on Esparza's compact frame, but it's a problem in such a finely calibrated sport. From Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the newest club fighter, boxers of all sizes obsess over the strength and mobility contained in every pound lost or gained.

"Some boxers that we've seen worldwide just figured they couldn't do it. They were too small to go up, so they didn't really feel like they could be competitive, or they were too big to try to make that 165," Halbert said.

Just 36 fighters ? 12 in each of the three weight classes ? will appear in the first Olympic women's boxing tournament this summer; trials began this week at the Northern Quest resort-casino outside Spokane. When the IOC created its weight classes for women, the governing body cited its need to limit the total boxers at the Games to 286; one of the 11 normal weight classes for the 250 male boxers was also cut.

After her initial dismay, Esparza ? a six-time national champion ? began the two-year process of meticulously building up her body to another weight class, approaching it as a challenge both athletic and intellectual.

"I take this extremely serious, and I had to make sure I did everything the right way," Esparza said. "There was no way that I could handle the strength of the other girls if I just jumped up, so I decided to take a whole year to build my fighting."

For the first year, the 5-foot-3 Esparza stayed at 106 pounds, honing her technique instead of her body. When she started to gain weight, she stayed out of the ring for a full year. She changed her diet, nearly eliminating carbohydrates and downing protein shakes and supplements.

For a year, she ate four or five times every day, yet never got above 109 pounds. The last three pounds came on in the past few months: "Now, I'm solid," she said.

Other fighters faced even bigger challenges. Christina Cruz, a longtime 119-pounder from Manhattan, had to go in the opposite direction to meet Esparza in the middle ? and she did it more quickly, honing her diet and focusing on speed over pure strength.

As a taller girl in a lighter class, she's finding ways to use the new weight to her advantage.

"It was a little different, and it took a while to get comfortable, but I like it now," Cruz said. "The girls at the lower weight are a lot quicker than what I was fighting. The target is also smaller.

"I'm one of the tall girls now," said the 5-foot-5 Cruz, "but a lot of times it works to my advantage. I can use my reach on them, and I think my speed has increased."

Even fighters who succeeded in making weight had to bid goodbye to their pre-eminence in another weight class. Andrecia Wasson won the welterweight world title in 2010 and was the world's top-ranked 152-pounder in November 2010. She had to move up to 165 pounds in just over a year to take her Olympic shot, entering the U.S. team trials as an unseeded fighter.

Other American fighters couldn't manage it.

Cashmere Jackson was the 2010 national champion at 141 pounds, winning a bronze medal at the world championships. The Cleveland fighter moved down to 132 pounds last year to fit into the Olympic class, but didn't make it to the trials.

Denise Rico was the world's No. 7 fighter at 178 pounds, but the Olympics have no place for her.

The shrinking weight classes have set up furious competition across the world for the debut Olympic spots. Just one fighter in each class at the U.S. team trials will advance to the world championships in China in May, where they must finish among the top eight to qualify for the Olympics.

Even before the classes merged, Esparza's 106-pound class was already the most popular "for all the small girls in the world," she says.

"Now everybody from two or three weight classes is at 112," she said. "But I feel good about it. I never had strength as a boxer before I gained the weight, and now I have it. I have everything now."

Grammy Awards: 6 best performances (The Week)

New York ? Adele brings the audience to their feet, Jennifer Hudson brings them to tears, and more highlights from Sunday's performance-packed telecastSunday night's Grammy Awards was all about two women: Adele and Whitney Houston. The former was the night's big winner, emerging victorious in all six of the categories she competed in, including the Big Three: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. And Houston's death on Saturday permeated the event's entire proceedings. The music industry's big night opened with a prayer in honor of the late singer, and mourning stars honored her memory throughout the ceremony. Here are six of the performances from Grammy night that critics are buzzing about:

1. Adele ? "Rolling in the Deep"
Much of the night was spent building up to Adele's highly-anticipated performance of "Rolling in the Deep," her first since undergoing throat surgery in November. There were concerns about how she would perform, says Dan Fienberg at HitFix. "The answer? Flawlessly." Her vocals were more powerful than ever, the arrangement refreshingly spare. Adele even managed to revitalize a song that had become maddeningly ubiquitous. She followed up by winning the night's biggest award: Album of the Year. As she tearfully kissed her boyfriend; joked that her record was inspired by a "rubbish relationship;" and adorably realized during her speech, "Oh my God, snot," she proved that her personality is as "infectious" as her songs, says Mary Elizabeth Williams at Salon. In more ways than one, it was Adele's night.

2. Jennifer Hudson ? "I Will Always Love You"
Jennifer Hudson reportedly had trouble staying composed during rehearsals of her tribute to Whitney Houston, a stirring rendition of "I Will Always Love You," says Gregory Ellwood at HitFix. It's understandable, considering the pressure of singing that mammoth song in salute of an icon just a day after her passing. But Hudson "delivered a rendition to move even the coldest hearts." The Oscar-winner wisely side-stepped a big crescendo and sappy orchestration, opting for a spare arrangement that allowed her to belt it out, says Williams at Salon. It was, simply put, "beautiful." If there's one thing to complain about, says Spencer Kornhaber at The Atlantic, it's the there wasn't more attention given to Houston. Hudson's performance "will be talked about for a long time," but many viewers wanted more.
3. Bruce Springsteen ? "We Take Care of Our Own"
The Boss and his E Street Band were dressed in all black opening the ceremony with a "rousing run" of their new song, "We Take Care of Our Own," a "choice that felt especially poignant in light of the events of the previous 24 hours," says Ray Rahman at Entertainment Weekly. It was a perfect, appropriate to kick off the evening, says Williams. "It was soulful, spirited, and just the right touch of mournful." Beyond that, says Tamar Anitai at MTV, the performance confirmed that "Bruce Springsteen does not age."

4. Bruno Mars ? "Runaway Baby"
"Get off your rich asses and lets have fun!" Bruno Mars instructed the Grammy audience during his high-energy, '50s pop homage performance of "Runaway Baby." The singer was backed by a full horn section ? all donning matching shiny gold blazers and bow ties ? and expertly channeled James Brown's loose-limbed, suave dance moves. It was a breakout moment for Mars, says Daniel Montgomery at Gold Derby. His "doo-wop showmanship" was the "surprise highlight of the night." Agrees Chris Eggerton at HitFix: "It was nearly flawless."
5. The Band Perry, Blake Shelton, and Glen Campbell ? Tribute Medley
Of the two tribute medleys staged on Sunday night, The Band Perry and Blake Shelton's performance with country legend Glen Campbell easily trumped the awkward collaboration of Maroon 5, Foster the People, and the Beach Boys, says Randall Roberts at the Los Angeles Times. It was one of the ceremony's few moments that "cut through the sarcasm and earned only sincerity," says Fienberg. Things started off slowly with The Band Perry's rendition of "Gentle On My Mind," built up with Shelton's take on "Southern Nights," but really hit its stride when Campbell hit the stage for sing-a-long rendition of "Rhinestone Cowboy" that was "by far the greatest exhibition of bad-ass, rock-and-roll indomitability of the night," says Williams.

?

6. Nicki Minaj ? "Roman Holiday"
Perhaps no performance was more divisive than Nicki Minaj's gothic, theatrical, campy, and all-out-odd rendition of her new single "Roman Holiday." "It was like watching a low-budget spin-off of The Exorcist turned into an off-off Broadway musical that's canceled after opening night," says Idolator. But not everyone panned the flashy performance. "Minaj christened herself pop's new weirdo," says James Reed at The Boston Globe. Without Lady Gaga and Madonna adding their unique brand of spectacle to Sunday's show, her "elaborate multimedia performance? was brash, jolting, and downright bizarre."
