Parents: No Oscar nod for film about Ark. killings

(AP) ? The parents of one of three West Memphis, Ark., boys found dead 18 years ago are asking that a documentary about the killings be excluded from Academy Award consideration.

Todd and Dana Moore made the request in a letter sent Nov. 22 to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' documentary division. In it, the Moores argue that "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" glorifies Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were released from prison in August after their sentences were set aside and they pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

"Because of public pressure that exploded due to gross misrepresentations of fact in the two previous documentaries, Michael's killers were unjustly able to enter into a plea agreement, were released from prison and now pose additional threats to society," the letter reads.

"We implore the Academy not to reward our child's killers and the directors who have profited from one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated under the guise of a documentary film."

The couple's 8-year-old son, Michael, along with Steve Branch and Christopher Byers were found naked and bludgeoned in a ditch on May 6, 1993.

Director Joe Berlinger defended the film but also acknowledged that he understood the parents' grief.

"We feel tremendous sorrow for them," Berlinger told the Jonesboro Sun (http://bit.ly/sdbSAG) for a story in Wednesday's editions. "We understand why a film that comes to a different conclusion than they do would make them feel this way. We stand by our films. We fervently believe the West Memphis Three are innocent."

Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley, dubbed the West Memphis Three, entered their pleas under a legal provision that allowed them to maintain their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict them. Echols was sentenced to death for the killings.

An email sent to the academy after hours seeking comment wasn't immediately answered Wednesday. An attempt to leave an after-hours phone message was unsuccessful.

The Moores appeared briefly in the first documentary about the deaths, "Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills," which aired on HBO in 1996. But they claimed Berlinger and Sinofsky "misled" and "manipulated" them.

"We appeared solely in the first film because the directors lied and told us their purpose was to protect children," the letter says.

When Berlinger and fellow director Bruce Sinofsky began the first film, they thought the three men were guilty of committing the killings, Berlinger said. Every effort was made to show that Todd and Dana believed the men were guilty, he added.

HBT: Cubs sign DeJesus to 2-year, $10 million deal

David DeJesus has agreed to a two-year contract with the Cubs and is expected to be Chicago?s starting right fielder, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the deal is worth $10 million and includes a team option for 2014, when DeJesus will be 34 years old.

DeJesus is coming off a career-worst season in Oakland, hitting just .240 with his first sub-.700 OPS, but prior to being traded to the A?s he was consistently a very good on-base threat and plus defensive outfielder during seven seasons for the Royals.

He lacks ideal power for a corner outfielder, but DeJesus has a .354 career on-base percentage, including an OBP above .345 every season from 2004 to 2010, and he?s capable of hitting 10-15 homers. He?s hardly a headline-grabbing pickup, but DeJesus has long been an underrated all-around player who?ll fit atop the Cubs? lineup and the price is certainly right.

Oakland offered DeJesus arbitration, so the A?s will receive a supplemental first-round pick as compensation.

To self-diagnose, spit on an iPhone

HANDHELD gadgets could one day diagnose infections at the push of a button by using the supersensitive touchscreens in today's smartphones.

Many believe that in the future collecting samples of saliva, urine or blood could be performed using a cheap, USB-stick-sized throwaway device called a lab-on-a-chip. The user would inject a droplet of the fluid in the chip, and micropumps inside it would send the fluid to internal vessels containing reagents that extract target disease biomarker molecules. The whole device would then be sent to a lab for analysis.

But Hyun Gyu Park and Byoung Yeon Won at the Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology in Daejeon think touchscreens could improve the process by letting your phone replace the lab work. Park suggests the lab-on-a-chip could present a tiny droplet of the sample to be pressed against a phone's touchscreen for analysis, where an app would work out whether you have food poisoning, strep throat or flu, for example.

The idea depends on a method the pair have devised to harness the way a touchscreen senses a fingertip's ability to store electric charge - known as its capacitance. The capacitive sensitivity of touchscreens is far higher than what is needed to sense our fingers as we play games or tap out tweets. "Since these touchscreens can detect very small capacitance changes we thought they could serve as highly sensitive detection platforms for disease biomarkers," says Park.

So the pair began proof-of-concept tests to see if the touchscreens in our pockets could play a role in diagnosing our ailments. First they took three solutions containing differing concentrations of DNA from the bacteria that causes chlamydia and applied droplets from each to an iPhone-sized multitouch display. They found that the output from the screen's array of crisscrossed touch-sensing electrodes could distinguish between the capacitances caused by each concentration using droplets of only 10 microlitres (Angewandte Chemie International Edition, DOI: 10.1002/anie201105986).

The technology is not yet able to identify individual pathogens but Park sees the display's ability to differentiate between concentrations as a first step towards this.

However, before the idea can be rolled out the built-in software on touchscreens that eliminates false-touch signals caused by moisture or sweat would need modifying. Park also plans to develop a film that can be stuck on a touchscreen to which the biomarkers will attach. "Nobody wants direct application of bio-samples onto their phone," he says.

"This is potentially possible," says Harpal Minhas, editor of the journal Lab On A Chip. "But any changes to current production-line touchscreens would need to demonstrate huge financial benefits before they are implemented." And DNA sequencing, rather than concentration measurement, is more likely to be necessary for disease diagnosis, he adds.
