(AP) ? With big, automatic budget cuts about to kick in, House Republicans are turning to mapping strategy for the next showdown just a month away, when a government shutdown instead of just a slowdown will be at stake.

Both topics are sure to come up at the White House meeting Friday between President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner. A breakthrough on replacing or easing the imminent across-the-board spending cuts still seems unlikely at the first face-to-face discussion between Obama and Republican leaders this year.

To no one's surprise, even as a dysfunctional Washington appears incapable of averting a crisis over economy-rattling spending cuts, it may be lurching toward another over a possible shutdown.

Republicans are planning for a vote next week on a bill to fund the day-to-day operations of the government through the Sept. 30 end of the 2013 fiscal year ? while keeping in place the new $85 billion in cuts of 5 percent to domestic agencies and 8 percent to the military.

The need to keep the government's doors open and lights on ? or else suffer the first government shutdown since 1996 ? requires the GOP-dominated House and the Democratic-controlled Senate to agree. Right now they hardly see eye to eye.

The House GOP plan, unveiled to the rank and file on Wednesday, would award the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs with their line-by-line budgets, for a more-targeted rather than indiscriminate batch of military cuts, but would deny domestic agencies the same treatment. And that has whipped up opposition from veteran Democratic senators on the Appropriations Committee. Domestic agencies would see their budgets frozen almost exactly as they are, which would mean no money for new initiatives such as cybersecurity or for routine increases for programs such as low-income housing.

"We're not going to do that," said Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. "Of course not."

Any agreement needs to pass through a gantlet of House tea party conservatives intent on preserving the across-the-board cuts and Senate Democrats pressing for action on domestic initiatives, even at the risk of creating a foot-tall catchall spending bill.

There's also this: GOP leaders have calculated that the automatic cuts arriving on Friday need to be in place in order for them to be able to muster support from conservatives for the catchall spending bill to keep the government running. That's because many staunch conservatives want to preserve the cuts even as defense hawks and others fret about the harm that might do to the military and the economy. If the automatic cuts are dealt with before the government-wide funding bill gets a vote, there could be a conservative revolt.

"The overall sequester levels must hold," said Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif.

Little to no progress has been made so far between House and Senate leaders and the White House, and given the hard feelings engulfing Washington, there's no guarantee that this problem can be solved, even though the stakes ? a shutdown of non-essential government programs after March 27 ? carry more risk than the across-the-board cuts looming on Friday.

The funding plan for the rest of the fiscal year will be a main topic at the White House meeting on Friday, the March 1 deadline day for averting the across-the-board cuts.

Obama, speaking to a group of business executives Wednesday night, said the cuts would be a "tumble downward" for the economy, though he acknowledged it could takes weeks before many Americans feel the full impact of the budget shrinking.

The warring sides in Washington have spent this week assigning blame rather than seeking a bipartisan way out. In a glimpse of the state of debate on Wednesday, Republicans and the White House bickered over whether the cuts would be under way by the time Friday's meeting started. A spokesman for Boehner said they would be in place; the White House countered that Obama would in fact have until midnight Friday to set them in motion.

The cumbersome annual ritual of passing annual agency spending bills collapsed entirely last year ? not a single one of the 12 annual appropriations bills for the budget year that began back in October has passed Congress ? and Congress has to act by March 27 to prevent a partial shutdown of the government.

By freezing budgets for domestic agencies, the Republican plan would deny an increase for a big cybersecurity initiative, additional money to modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal and money to build new Coast Guard cutters. GOP initiatives such as more money for the Small Business Administration or fossil fuels research would be hurt as well, but there's little appetite for the alternative, which is to stack more than $1 trillion worth of spending bills together for a single up-or-down vote.

But the GOP move to add the line-by-line spending bills for the Pentagon and veterans' programs to the catchall spending bill would give the military much-sought increases for force readiness and the Veterans Administration additional funding for health care.

That approach has few fans in the White House, which is seeking money to implement Obama's signature efforts to overhaul financial regulation and the nation's health care system, or within the Democratic Senate, where members of the Appropriations Committee want to add a stack of bills covering domestic priorities such as homeland security, NASA and federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI.

"You need balance," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "We feel as strongly about the domestic side as we do defense."

The catchall spending measure, known as a continuing resolution or CR inside Washington, was originally seen as a potential must-pass measure to avert Friday's cuts or make them less severe. But no serious talks to avert the cuts have been under way.

On Thursday, Democrats will force a vote on a measure that would forestall the automatic cuts through the end of the year, replacing them with longer-term cuts to the Pentagon and cash payments to farmers and installing a minimum 30 percent tax rate on income exceeding $1 million. But that plan is virtually certain to be toppled by a GOP-led filibuster vote.

Republicans in turn are considering offering a measure that would give Obama authority to propose a rewrite to the 2013 budget to redistribute the cuts. Obama would be unable to cut defense by more than the $43 billion reduction that the Pentagon currently faces, and would also be unable to raise taxes to undo the cuts. The GOP plan would allow a resulting Obama proposal to go into effect unless Congress passed a resolution to overturn it.

The idea is that money could be transferred from lower-priority accounts to accounts funding air traffic control or meat inspection. But the White House says that such moves would offer only slight relief. At the same time, however, it could take pressure off of Congress to address the sequester.

In the House, where Republicans in the past Congress passed legislation to replace the cuts, Boehner has said it's now up to Obama and the Senate to figure a way out. The Senate never took up the House-passed bills, which expired when the new Congress was seated in January.

Jackson Jr.'s district has history of corruption

CHICAGO (AP) ? They elected a Harvard-educated Rhodes Scholar and ended up with a congressman who was convicted of having sex with an underage campaign worker. They voted for the son of a famous civil rights leader and got someone who illegally spent campaign funds on everything from furniture to Bruce Lee memorabilia.

Call it Chicago corruption at its worst or simply uncanny coincidence, but residents of Illinois' 2nd Congressional District haven't been represented in Congress in more than three decades by someone who didn't end up in serious ethical or legal trouble. That hangs over them as they go to the polls Tuesday for a special primary to begin picking a replacement for disgraced former U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr.

It began with Gus Savage, who took office in 1981 and was defeated a decade later after allegations of sexual misconduct with a Peace Corps worker while on a congressional visit abroad. Then there was Mel Reynolds, who won office in 1992 and was convicted of fraud and having sex with a minor. This past week, after 17 years in office, Jackson pleaded guilty to spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal expenses.

"They all drank from the same cup," said Charles Hill, an unemployed father of five. The Chicago resident once supported Jackson, but the legal drama has left him so drained he's not even paying attention to the batch of nearly 20 candidates vying for the spot. "It's a sad commentary."

Even by Illinois' corruption standards ? where four of the last seven governors were sent to jail ? troubles in the district are astonishing. The attempts to explain it ? among voters, experts and the most recent candidates vying for the seat ? range from a culture of corruption to pure coincidence.

Corruption in Chicago politics dates back to at least 1869, when city commissioners were snagged in a scheme over City Hall paint contracts. More than 1,000 Illinois public officials, most in the Chicago area, have been convicted of corruption since the 1970s, according to Dick Simpson, a University of Illinois at Chicago professor. In a study, he ranked Chicago as the No. 1 in corruption among U.S. metropolitan areas.

Jackson's grip on the 2nd District seat ? winning each election since 1995 in a landslide ? created conditions ripe for wrongdoing, Simpson said. Even so, he's slightly baffled by why more problems seem to exist in this district than in others with similar demographics and longtime congressmen.

"Unfortunately, the 2nd Congressional District seems to be an epicenter for these mistakes by public officials," he said.

The district includes part of Chicago's South Side, south suburbs and some rural areas.

Talk of ethics has been a secondary issue among the candidates after jobs and guns, as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's political action committee has poured money into ads criticizing candidates it deems too weak on gun control. The candidates include 14 Democrats and four Republicans. The district is largely Democratic, and the winner of Tuesday's Democratic primary is widely expected to sail through the April 9 election.

The only hint of an ethics scandal has involved former state Rep. Robin Kelly, a front-runner who's been attacked by other candidates over accusations that she misrepresented hours she worked as a top aide to former Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias in 2010. The Chicago Tribune obtained a report by the chief investigator in the treasurer's office through an open records request. No action was taken against Kelly because she had already left state government.

Kelly has denied wrongdoing and dismissed the allegations as "political silly season."

As for the region's troubles with ethics?

"I think it's coincidental," she said. "I don't think the district has any whammy over it."

Those who agree with her include Reynolds, who's running for the seat again. He says the corruption issue has been blown out of proportion, and his campaign signs read, "REDEMPTION."

"An aberration is what happened in my life," he said. "It was not a determination of my character."

That hasn't kept the issue from the headlines, especially with Jackson's legal proceedings playing out in federal court. Jackson and his wife, former Alderman Sandi Jackson, both pleaded guilty Wednesday in the scheme.

Another candidate, former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, has emphasized the issue, saying it's a time for a clean slate. She unsuccessfully challenged Jackson in last year's primary, even as he was plagued by questions over ties to imprisoned ex.-Gov. Rod Blagojevich and reports of an extramarital affair. Blagojevich was convicted on corruption charges that included trying to sell President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.

"People want to close this door to unethical behavior," she said. "We've had enough. This district has been plagued for far too long."

The third front-runner, Anthony Beale, a Chicago alderman whose ward overlaps with the district, said the fact that neither Reynolds nor Jackson held public office before Congress was likely a factor in their ethical problems.

"They were not homegrown to know what the district needs," Beale said.

Savage was defeated by Reynolds after the House Ethics Committee determined he made improper sexual advances to a female volunteer. Then Reynolds was convicted in the sex case and sent to prison. Later, while still behind bars, he was convicted of federal wire and bank fraud charges. President Bill Clinton commuted his sentence in 2001.

The district's history has fueled cynicism among some voters.

Grocery store worker Pnakara Nealy, 32, of Calumet Park, supported Jackson in the past, but now she's disillusioned with politics.

"He's not the only one doing it," she said of Jackson. "He just got caught."

Video: Controversy over giant panda conservation

>>> giant pandas are one of the world's most high-profile endangered species even though it might sound shocking. there are now critics who are asking whether efforts to save the adorable bears are really worth the money and effort. here's more.

>> reporter: it's easy to see why pandas are the poster bears of the conservation movement . they're cute.

>> they're very cute. they're incredibly cute.

>> reporter: sarah becsal, a conservationist, has been working in china at the research base of giant panda breeding for 13 years.

>> i think that infantile appearance engenders us to want to protect, protect, protect.

>> reporter: with so few pandas left in the wild, scientists have been breeding pandas in captivity with the home of one day setting them free. a high-tech, expensive operation. female pandas are anesthetized and artificially inseminated. here's the result -- these cubs are just four months old they're so cute and so little. we were allowed to go into the nursery and watch them sleeping, eating, and learning how to walk. it's almost become like an industry. you know, trying to make as many pandas as possible.

>> i would say that that's a fair way to explain it.

>> reporter: an industry dedicated to saving the panda. what could be wrong with that?

>> i think that pouring millions and millions of dollars into one species of albeit incredibly cute animal is salacious.

>> reporter: a wildlife expert for the bbc is one of a small but growing number of critics that think with so many species going extinct it makes no sense to spend so much money trying to save just one.

>> i don't want the panda to be extinct. but ultimately, let's not waste vast amounts of money trying to prevent it when we could use that money far more efficiently, far more optimally somewhere else.

>> reporter: he says all the pandas china's breeding will likely spend their lives in zoos, including zoos here in america, since china's industrial growth has left little space for them in the wild. and to have them as a zoo animal, to have them only living in captivity --

>> no point.

>> reporter: sarah doesn't believe that saving the panda even in the wild is a lost cause.

>> if we truly cannot save space for giant padas, how could -- pandas, how could we have hope for others if we can't save the one that we profess to love the most?

>> reporter: scientists are doing everything they can to save this icon of wildlife conservation . for "today," kate snow , china.

Facebook Adds Free Voice Calling to its iOS App

Facebook Adds Free Voice Calling to its iOS AppFacebook just updated its iOS app with a number of new features, most notably the ability to make voice calls over Wi-Fi and data to your Facebook friends.

This feature came to Facebook Messenger awhile ago, but now anyone with the regular Facebook app can take advantage in the US and Canada. Just open up your chat list from the button in the upper right-hand corner, tap on a friend, and choose "Free Call." Your friends will have to have the latest version of Facebook for iOS and be signed into chat to receive calls. It's far from the only VoIP solution on the iPhone, but since most of your friends probably have Facebook anyway, it's a handy way to contact them without using minutes. Just watch how much data you use if you have a limited plan.

AirAsia To Enter India?s Newly Liberalized Aviation Sector

Feb. 22 ? AirAsia, Southeast Asia?s largest budget airline, is set to enter the Indian market in a joint venture (JV) with India?s Tata Group and Telestra. This marks the Tata Group?s first enterprise in the aviation industry since the 1930s.

India liberalized its civil aviation sector to foreign investment last September, and this has opened up the way for Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia to submit a proposal to India?s Foreign Investment Promotional Board to create a JV. AirAsia will have a 49 percent stake in the business while Tata and Telestra will own 30 percent and 21 percent respectively.

The airline, which will reportedly have an initial investment of between US$20-US$50 million, will likely be based in Chennai on India?s east coast. Tata will only be an investor and will not have any operational roles in the JV. The three parties have already signed an agreement and will apply to the civil aviation regulator for a flying permit soon.

The JV will initially target businessmen, holiday travellers and family members travelling to Singapore and Malaysia from Chennai, and will then expand to other tier two and tier three cities and towns. AirAsia already services Chennai with fights from Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, and also connects the Indian cities of Bangalore, Tiruchorappalli, Kochi and Kolkata to numerous ASEAN destinations.

?When AirAsia approached Tata with the proposal?[we] concluded that given its reputed business model, AirAsia could be a relevant and successful service provider in the domestic sector,? said a spokesperson for Tata.

Tata further explained that the AirAsia JV will ?benefit the domestic market [in a number of ways] including: a) AirAsia?s reputed service, which will further grow aviation as a mode of transport in what is a relatively underserved market and b) employment generation.?

Upon hearing the news of the JV, competitors SpiceJet and Jet Airways experienced a drop in their stocks by 4.45 percent and 2 percent respectively.

Air travel in India is expected to triple by 2020. Middle East-based Etihad Airways is also in negotiations with Jet Airways of India in a similar JV structure to enter the Indian market.

Mussel Glue Could Help Repair Birth Defects

15 years ago is about right actually..

Consider:

"We are the FDA. We demand you make very costly animal model studies first, then, after those studies, you have conduct phase 1 and phase 2 human clinical trials, THEN, AFTER THAT, we have to decide if we want to approve commercial use and production or not."

Throw in a few bouts of "Oh my gawd! They put clam juice inside some poor gerbil, and glued it all up inside! THOSE MONSTERS!", and a few rounds of "Animal models are poor substitutes for human testing, and amount to nothing, so you arent getting funding."

In the end, 15 years since "Hey! This stuff looks very promising as a biosafe adhesive for surgical applications!" looks like BREAKNECK PROGRESS!

(and you wonder why rich americans with deadly diseases and debilitating conditions leave the US to go on "Medical vacations" in the EU and Thailand.)

Let?s Abolish This Dumb, Stupid State of the Union Tradition

Let?s Abolish This Dumb, Stupid State of the Union Tradition
    Thursday, February 14th, 2013

Conventional wisdom says the pomp and ceremony have something to do with the duty of the President spec?d out in the United States Constitution. Specifically Article II, Section 3, which says?

He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient?

The circus clown show we see today, therefore, may trace its roots back to the founding. We make a mistake in assuming that this means it?s faithful to it. We should be reassessing this. To coin a phrase, we ?need a national dialogue? on it. There?s been an awful lot of patchwork replacing the original quilt here.

The President does not tell Congress what to do, for starters. You can read ?recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary? in a lot of different ways, but ?recommend? is something you do when the other guy has the final say. Our current President doesn?t seem to understand this, although to be fair about it, the perversion started long before we ever heard about Him.

Also, to continue to be even more fair about it, the damage Obama is doing to the country typically results from an unhappy situation in which He really is the best president for our times. So our problems with Him, really have to do with the problems of our times. Implicit in His job as He understands it, and to be realistic about it His understanding is not a problem of misinterpretation by any means, is: Drag the country leftward, as far as possible and as fast as possible. Flank the enemy. Out-maneuver all who will oppose You, outnumber them, geld them, pressure them, bully them, dilute their influence.

This previous November, it was established that a slim majority of the country likes this. Or, a slim majority of those who bothered to show up to vote, anyway. That?s something. We still have a governmental system filled with checks-n-balances though, and those checks and balances are there for a reason. If President Obama wants to make Congress? votes go a certain way, as opposed to simply supplying recommendations, He can always run for His old seat in the Senate.

But, of course, there are television cameras. When politicians appear in front of television cameras, they use the appearance to swing the public toward their point of view, to put the pressure on their opposition in the most contentious matters. That is what politicians are going to do. Every time. It?s just a fact of life.

And so it could very well be that if we could have a ?do-over,? with the constitutional verbiage left the way it is and all politicians and cameramen and news producers acting on their incentives the way they do, but the history scrubbed clean, we?d end up precisely where we are now. And, a hundred times more, with a hundred more do-overs. That could very well be the case. But if it is, then it isn?t cause for celebration.

In our system of governance, the President is not a dictator. He is not even the star of the show. You do realize this, right? In our system, He is merely one of several players. The Constitution grants Him this monopoly in the discourse for a time, based on the premise that He is working in concert with the rest of the executives and legislators. It?s no different than the pilot of your aircraft, in fulfillment of a part of his duties as Captain, ?monopolizing? the sound space for a minute or so while he addresses you over the P.A. system. If he has some kind of conflict with the co-pilot, or the stewardesses or whatever you call ?em nowadays, or the deck crew or the luggage crew or the fuel crew, and uses this sound-space monopoly to settle that conflict in his favor, then obviously that would be an abuse of the system. I mean, I can imagine all sorts of scenarios for that, and some of them are quite entertaining. But it still is an abuse of the system. Improper utilization, for something other than its designated purpose.

Well, that?s exactly what we?re seeing happen here every year.

So why the applause?

State Republicans seek weakening of clean energy rules

Efforts to retreat on state clean energy measures brought high-energy testimony from industry supporters on Tuesday.

Testimony for two Senate bills aimed at easing clean energy requirements enshrined in a 2006 initiative spilled over Tuesday, running so long that testimony for a third had to be postponed.

All three take aim at requirements for power companies in Washington to get part of their energy from renewable sources by 2020. Washington voters passed the requirements, designed to take effect gradually, in the form of 2006 Initiative 937. While none of the three scheduled for Tuesday proposed changing the timeline itself, all three proposed widening how power companies could meet the clean energy requirements.

The primary argument in favor of the bills Tuesday was that easing the requirements would make energy cheaper for power companies, who would in turn pass the savings on to their customers.

Tim Boyd, a representative of a trade association made up of industrial users of electricity, said of the initiative's renewable energy goals, "These are arguments about the future. The future doesn't do much good for somebody who can't pay their electric bill."

One of the bills, SB 5432, would loosen the definition of renewable energy ? by including power generated by dams ? so much that, in effect, no change would be required to comply with the bill. Already, more of Washington's electricity is produced by dams than the 15 percent ultimately required by the initiative.

The other two bills, SB 5438 and SB 5648, would allow power companies to carry over renewable energy credits from one year to the next. SB 5648 also would allow exempt from clean energy requirements the electricity from pre-2010 power plants or electricity bought under pre-2010 contracts from clean energy, allowing utilities that aren't expanding to avoid having to change the ways they produce power.

Tuesday's testimony was before the Senate energy, environment and telecommunications committee. So many industry and utility company representatives testified ? and were allowed so long to do so ? that testimony on SB 5432 had to be bumped from the agenda.

Committee chair Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, said afterward that he thought that voters hadn't understood that green energy would be more expensive when they passed the initiative. Enough business owners had complained to him about the increased cost of electricity, Ericksen said, that he felt authorized to propose changing the voter-approved law.

Ericksen sponsored two of the bills. The third was sponsored by freshman Sen. Sharon Brown, R-Kennewick.

Ericksen said that SB 5432, which he sponsored, has almost no chance of avoiding veto by Gov. Jay Inslee, who championed initiative 937 as a member of Congress. But Ericksen said he hopes that at least the proposal of the bills would help change an energy policy he called a wrong-headed.

"Maybe we'll get there someday, build some nukes [nuclear power plants] and get a better energy policy," Ericksen said. "But we're not there yet."

No date was immediately available for the rescheduled public hearing on SB 5432.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas Joins 'Last Man Standing' For 'Home Improvement' Reunion

Jonathan Taylor Thomas will guest star on "Last Man Standing," makring his first return to TV since "Veronica Mars" in 2005.

It'll be a "Home Improvement" reunion for Thomas and "Last Man Standing" star Tim Allen. Thomas played Allen's middle son Randy for eight seasons on "Home Improvement."

According to Entertainment Weekly, Thomas will play a manager of a restaurant where Allen's character's daughter, Kristin (Amanda Fuller), applies for a job. So far Thomas is only booked for one episode.

This isn't the first "Home Improvement" reunion staged on "Last Man Standing." Earlier in Season 2 Richard Karn, who played Al on the series, guest starred.

EW reunited the cast for a photoshoot in 2011 and rumors quickly started swirling about reunions. When asked if he'd guest star on "Last Man Standing," Thomas laughed and told EW, "That has not come up yet. We?ll see about that. I?m sure they have a lot of stories they want to get to."

Zachery Ty Bryan spoke to HuffPost in June 2012 and said he was hopeful to reunite the cast.

"I'm not too sure about that. Last I spoke was with [producer] Gayle Maffeo," he said. "She told me that it was 'in process.' But I'm still waiting for a call. I will let you know as soon as I know. I'm excited! I've got my fingers crossed."

Thomas' "Last Man Standing" episode is scheduled to air in later 2013.

  • Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams & Katie Holmes On "Don't Trust The B---- In Apartment 23"

While we're very excited to see Busy Philipps and James Van Der Beek back together on the ABC comedy, a "Dawson's Creek" reunion is just not the same with the rest of the gang. Van Der Beek, Jackson and Williams have been teasing a reunion for a while now, but Holmes seemed iffy. However, after her divorce from Tom Cruise, it was reported that he was the one who didn't want the Capeside crew to reconnect. But now that Holmes is a single lady, someone needs to get this started!

  • Christina Applegate On "Modern Family"

It would be heartwarming to see the "Married With Children" father and daughter reunited on "Modern Family" after all these years. Maybe Applegate could make a cameo as a wacky cousin from Jay's ex-wife's Dede's side of the family.

  • Elizabeth Berkley and Lark Voorhies on "White Collar"

It's beyond time the ladies of "Saved by the Bell" reunite. Elizabeth Burke's (Tiffani Thiessen) high school friends (Elizabeth Berkley and Lark Voorhies) come calling and need the FBI's help. Good thing Peter and Neal are available.

  • John Stamos On "90210"

Uncle Jessie and Aunt Becky back together again? Yes please! "90210" could stage a full-blown "Full House" reunion with Lori Loughlin making an appearance. Why not have John Stamos play her new love interest?

  • Sarah Michelle Gellar On "Bones"

Before Stefan/Elena/Damon, Bill/Sookie/Eric or Edward/Bella, there was Buffy and Angel, the couple who made dating a bloodsucker look glamorous and tragic way before those copycats. Nowadays, David Boreanaz has traded in his fangs for an FBI badge on "Bones," but we'd still like to see SMG swooping in to try and seduce him while Brennan's on the lam, or at least commenting how good he looks with a tan, next season.

  • James Franco On "Cougar Town"

James Franco is long overdue to reunite with his bad-girl "Freaks And Geeks" co-star Busy Phillips, and Laurie (Busy's character) could use a tall, dark handsome stranger in her life. Let's bring back Daniel and Kim!

  • Tom Hanks On "Girls"

On the upcoming season of "Girls," "Bosom Buddies" alum Tom Hanks could show up as Hannah's dad's (Peter Scolari) old friend from college who Hannah develops an irrational crush on. Papa Horvath needs his bosom buddy!

  • Max Casella on "How I Met Your Mother"

"Doogie Howser, M.D." veterans gotta stick together. Max Casella could pop up on "How I Met Your Mother" as a doctor Barney turns to when the threat of an STI rears its ugly head.

  • Jared Leto On "Homeland"

There's no time like the present for Jordan Catalano to make a comeback, and where better to do it than in his "My So-Called Life" co-star Claire Danes' hit show? Leto can play eccentric pretty well, so we suggest Leto should appear as a fellow psychiatric patient Carrie meets following her ECT therapy -- she already has a great track record with dating unstable guys.

  • Fred Savage On "Sullivan & Son"

Dan Lauria plays Steve Sullivan's father on the new TBS bar comedy "Sullivan & Son." You know what'd be funny? If Lauria's other TV son, Fred Savage from "The Wonder Years," showed up in a cameo as a drunk, rowdy customer who had to be thrown out of their establishment.

  • Jurnee Smollett on "Baby Daddy"

It's been a few years, but we bet Michelle Tanner's "Full House" BFFs still keep in touch. Jurnee Smollett could pop up on "Baby Daddy" as Tucker's (Tahj Mowry) old flame. Could it be rekindled?

  • Jaleel White On "Hart Of Dixie"

Reginald VelJohnson -- the artist formerly known as Carl Winslow from "Family Matters" -- plays Bluebell, AL theatre expert Dash DeWitt on "Hart of Dixie." He runs an arts blog on the town's website, and do you know what every local theatre blog needs? A nerdy intern, preferably played by Jaleel White. Make it happen, CW.

  • Mario Lopez On "Franklin & Bash"

We think Mario Lopez should take a break from hosting and return to his perfectly permed roots by reuniting with "Saved By The Bell" BFFrenemy Mark-Paul Gosselaar. The erstwhile A.C. Slater could turn up as a client for Gosselaar's Peter Bash, or continue that antagonistic streak by appearing as a law school rival with an ax to grind.

  • Judith Light On "Mistresses"

Remember the ladies of "Who's the Boss?" Alyssa Milano starred as a housekeeper's (Tony Danza) daughter and Judith Light was the matriarch of the family they lived with and are employed by -- Milano's new series "Mistresses" seems like the perfect opportunity to find a brand new TV reunion around the bend. Light, who recurs on "Law & Order: SVU," could play a legendary famous mistress who helps Milano and the other newbies get through their experiences ... or, she could play the mother of one of the cheating men, who blames it all on his mistress.

  • Kel Mitchell On "Saturday Night Live"

When "Kenan & Kel" returned to TeenNick and Kenan hosted its opening night on the orange couch, #WheresKel was trending on Twitter. Kenan, an "SNL" cast member, has maintained a steady career after the success of their show and "Good Burger," but we haven't seen much of Kel lately -- he's done a lot of voice work in the past decade and has stuck to the kid market, guest-starring on Disney's "Good Luck Charlie." But maybe it's time for Kel to grow up and reunite with Kenan on "SNL." Will the orange soda jokes translate?

Newer, shorter-course antibiotic shows similar effectiveness for treating skin infection

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Treatment with a newer antibiotic, tedizolid phosphate, once daily for 6 days was statistically noninferior (no worse than) in efficacy to the antibiotic linezolid twice daily for 10 days for both early (at day 2 to 3) and sustained (at day 11) clinical responses in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, according to a study appearing in the February 13 issue of JAMA.

"Antimicrobials available for treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) are generally efficacious, but antimicrobial resistance and adverse effects limit their use. Linezolid, an oxazolidinone [a class of antibiotics], is the only oral drug approved for complicated SSSI caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)," according to background information in the article. Sporadic outbreaks of linezolid-resistant strains of MRSA have been reported. Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) can be life-threatening and may require surgery and hospitalization. "Increasingly, ABSSSIs are associated with drug-resistant pathogens, and many antimicrobial agents have adverse effects restricting their use. Tedizolid phosphate is a novel oxazolidinone in development for the treatment of ABSSSIs."

Philippe Prokocimer, M.D., of Trius Therapeutics Inc., San Diego, and colleagues conducted a study to establish the noninferiority of tedizolid phosphate vs. linezolid in treating ABSSSIs and compare the safety of the 2 agents. The phase 3, randomized trial was conducted from August 2010 through September 2011 at 81 study centers in North America, Latin America, and Europe. The intent-to-treat analysis set consisted of data from 667 adults ages 18 years or older with ABSSSIs treated with tedizolid phosphate (n = 332) or linezolid (n = 335). Patients were randomized to a 200 mg once daily dose of oral tedizolid phosphate for 6 days or 600 mg of oral linezolid every 12 hours for 10 days. The primary efficacy outcome was early clinical response at the 48- to 72-hour assessment (no increase in lesion surface area from baseline and oral temperature of 99.7?F or less, confirmed by a second temperature measurement within 24 hours). A 10 percent noninferiority margin was predefined.

The researchers found in the primary efficacy intent-to-treat (ITT) analysis, the response rates at the 48- to 72-hour assessment were 79.5 percent of 332 patients in the tedizolid phosphate group and 79.4 percent of 335 patients in the linezolid group. Sustained clinical treatment response rates at the end of treatment (day 11) were similar in the tedizolid phosphate and linezolid groups in the ITT analysis set (69.3 percent vs. 71.9 percent, respectively). Investigator-assessed clinical treatment response at the post-therapy evaluation (PTE) visit was also similar in the tedizolid phosphate and linezolid groups in the ITT analysis set (85.5 percent vs. 86.0 percent, respectively).

"Of particular interest are the similar treatment response rates in the tedizolid phosphate group (78.0 percent) and in the linezolid group (76.1 percent) in the sensitivity analysis that was based on the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health recommended outcome (? 20 percent decrease in lesion area)," the authors write.

Also, the researchers found that the clinical response rate at the PTE (7 to 14 days after completing therapy) was high (85 percent) for 178 patients infected with MRSA and similar in both the tedizolid phosphate and linezolid treatment groups.

Treatment-emergent adverse events (mostly mild or moderate) occurred in 40.8 percent of patients in the tedizolid phosphate group and 43.3 percent of patients in the linezolid group. The overall incidence of serious adverse events was low and similar between groups.

"A short course of tedizolid phosphate was statistically noninferior to a 10-day course of linezolid for both early and sustained clinical responses in patients with ABSSSIs. Results were consistent for primary and sensitivity analyses, using either objective criteria or investigators' assessments, and treatment response rates were concordant for early and late time points," the authors conclude.

Intel confirms: Online TV service in the works, set for 2013 launch

Chipmaking powerhouse Intel revealed on Tuesday its plans to roll out an online television service later this year, a move that could bring it into direct competition with Apple, which is also expected to launch a television product in the near future.

Speaking with AllThingsD, Intel Media corporate vice president Erik Huggers confirmed months-old rumors that an Intel-powered set-top box and accompanying TV service are on the way. The team building the platform, Huggers revealed, was composed of personnel hired away from an array of tech luminaries.
Intel will soon take on Apple in the alternative set-top segment with its own device.
"We've been working for about a year now to set up a group called Intel Media. It's a new division with new people ? people [we've hired] from Apple, Netflix, and Google."

Rumors of an Intel-powered box have been around for months, but picked up steam late last year, with the company expected to reveal its set-top solution during January's Consumer Electronics Show. The device failed to materialize at CES, but Tuesday's news conforms largely to what was expected of Intel.

Intel's offering will be centered around a set-top box and cable content packages. Intel is still negotiating the latter element with content providers, but it is expected that the packages will be smaller bundles than those customers currently receive from the cable companies. Those bundles are expected to be more tailored to consumers' own preferences.

The set-top box itself is also said to have an integrated camera, allowing for gesture-based controls as well as targeting ads directly toward users based on what the camera "sees" in the room.

Rolling out its own set top box and content service is a considerable departure from the norm for Intel. Typically, the company has been content to feature its products in the computers of much of the PC industry. That strategy, which led to $53.3 billion in revenue for 2012, may begin flagging in the coming years as the PC market continues to falter and consumers increasingly move to mobile devices, a segment Intel has struggled to enter.

Moving instead into providing its own set-top box will bring Intel into direct and indirect competition with not only the cable providers, but firms such as Samsung, LG, and Google, as well as Apple, which is widely rumored to be considering a disruptive leap into the television sector.

While the former three companies have seen varying degrees of success with Google TV and other Smart TV offerings, Apple's Apple TV has moved from niche product to "an area of intense interest" for the company. Speaking on the issue of television in general, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company believes it can contribute a lot to the space.

Young Afghan musicians in NY for date at Carnegie

Young musicians from a school in Kabul, Afghanistan, rehearse for a Carnegie Hall concert with musicians from Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, N.Y., on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013. The Afghan Youth Orchestra, many of whose members are not far removed from eking out a living on the streets of Kabul, is on the New York leg of a U.S. tour that melds Western classics with traditional Afghan music. About 50 players held a joint rehearsal Monday with 25 members of the Scarsdale High School orchestra, which meant that young musicians from a war-torn country where music was banned for several years by the Taliban were playing alongside those from one of New York's toniest suburbs. SCARSDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? For these young people from Afghanistan, it's the perfect trip to America. They get to scarf down New York pizza, go ice skating ? and take the stage at Carnegie Hall.

"This is all providing a model for the future of Afghanistan," said William Harvey, the Afghan orchestra's American conductor and arranger. "The recomposed music, taking the best from both worlds, and the cooperation between the Afghan kids and the Scarsdale kids, shows what has to happen for Afghanistan."

Among the pieces rehearsed in advance of Tuesday night's Carnegie program were adaptations of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Ravel's "Bolero," both incorporating Afghan instruments and rhythms.

A handful of people in the Scarsdale auditorium got to hear familiar melodies perked up with such instruments as the sitar, dilruba and ghichak. Some of the Afghan musicians were barefoot.

"I love the 'Bolero,'" said Milad Yousofi, 18, a pianist from Kabul who, like the rest of the orchestra, attends the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, which was founded just three years ago.

Yousofi is hoping the orchestra's U.S. visit ? it played in Washington last week and is headed for Boston ? will help him find a way to continue his musical education in America.

"I'm very excited and amazed that we are going to Carnegie Hall," he said. "New York is my dream city. I want to come here as soon as possible. But then I want to go back to Afghanistan and teach."

Hojat Hameed, 21, a violinist who also plays electric guitar in a rock band, said he became interested in music when he heard a Celine Dion recording.

"That made me want to become a musician," he said. "I could feel I wanted to come home to music."

Some of the Afghans may have been saved from desperate lives by the music school.

"One of my violinists used to sell chewing gum on the street," said Harvey, who spoke to the musicians in English and Dari, one of Afghanistan's two main languages. "She had to. The Taliban had beaten her father paralyzed and he couldn't work."

"The return of music to Afghanistan is a victory of the human spirit," Harvey said.

Ahmad Sarmast, who founded the school, said hearing the orchestra play was "a touching experience."

"The Taliban deprived children of their music," he said. "It was like a genocide of music. Now this is an incredible way of showing pride in our people, our youth, our school, our country."

He said the school, which is funded by the World Bank and others, is free and provides enough of a stipend to keep the musicians off the streets. And it accepts boys and girls, another reversal of Taliban orders.

Amedee Williams, who heads the Scarsdale music program, said he heard last year that the Afghan school was trying to raise funds for a tour. He contacted the school and suggested their orchestra members could save on New York hotels by staying with Scarsdale families. That turned out not to be necessary, but it forged a partnership that resulted in the Scarsdale orchestra joining the Afghans at Carnegie Hall.

Before the joint orchestra rehearsed on Sunday, he said, all the youngsters had pizza. Afterward, they went ice skating, which was a new activity for the Afghans "and some of the Scarsdale kids," Williams said.

"There was a lot of hand-holding, supporting each other," he said. "It was good to see."
